Upcoming Tomb Raider Movie Is Nothing Like The Angelina Jolie Films

Right after the very initial official images of the new Tomb Raider movie came up online this week, new details have emerged of the upcoming movie which takes its inspiration from the  long running video game franchise.

The director of the movie, Roar Uthaug, had an interview with GQ in which he said that the shooting of the movie has been done in South Africa and they are  now moving towards London. The movie stars Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft and is going to come in theaters in March 2018.

The poor track record of the movies of the video game with respect to quality is no longer a secret from anyone. The director, upon speaking to GQ, said that as per his thoughts, the movie is going to be resonated with the fans of the series as it is inspired and referenced by “the entire Tomb Raider canon”.

Already, there are two Tomb Raider movies that star Angelina Jolie but the new one is very different since it is an origin story of Lara Croft (very similar to the video game of 2013).

“It’s a story that not only highlights her incredible physical accomplishments but delves deeper into her humanity,” Uthaug said, “I’ve seen the films–they were a lot of fun and Angelina Jolie was a terrific Lara Croft. We are [making] a very different film, an origin story and I think fans will love Alicia in the role.”

The reboot of the 2013 Tomb Raider movie was the partisan inspiration for the film and it is going to contain ‘many touchstones’ from the game itself. However, Uthaug would like to let the fans know that the new movie is nothing like other adaptation movies from video games because it focuses on practical effects way more than the CGI and this was done in the Assassin’s Creed movie as well by Michael Fassbender. Uthaug adds to it by saying,

“Our movie takes a more realistic, grounded approach. Lara Croft is a hero and a champion but she is not a superhero. She is very much human, and we see her deal with that humanity in many ways.”

The upcoming movie also includes Walton Goggins (Sons of Anarchy) as the villain and Daniel Wu (Warcraft) as a captain of the ship who serves as an ally. Croft’s father is played by The Wire’s Dominic West. The reboot in 2013 has been reported as part of the trilogy. According to a lead last year, the suggested name of the third game is Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
