Zendaya Signed up as First Black Mary Jane in Spiderman Homecoming – Deal With It

Spiderman Homecoming

What can this girl not do? At just the age of 20 she has a net worth of $1.5 million and she has done it all by herself. Starting from Disney Channel and her own clothing line ‘Shake It Up Dance Clothing Line by Zendaya’, she is now signed up for the role of the iconic Mary Jane Watson (MJW) for the upcoming Spidey movie.

According to a report from The Wrap, former/future Disney actress and musician Zendaya has been signed up as Mary Jane Watson for Marvel and Sony’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. There has been a lot of hate regarding this role revelation from die-hard fans of Spiderman who say that the biracial Zendaya does not “look like” Mary Jane.

The former Disney Channel star will be starring next to British actor Tom Holland as a teenage Peter Parker a.k.a. Spiderman. Also, Sony and Marvel have made it pretty obvious that the director of the upcoming Spidey movie, Jon Watts, will reboot and focus merely on a high school-aged Peter Parker. The script is written and co-written by Jonathan Goldstein, John Francis Daley, Christopher Ford, Chris McKenna, Erik Sommers, and the director himself. The cast also includes Michael Keaton, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Tyne Daly, Bokeem Woodbine, Marisa Tomei, and Robert Downey Jr.

Although there were no further details provided regarding the characters nor about what sort of chemistry to expect out of the two lead actors from the movie – platonic or not platonic? We are yet to find out.

Keeping in mind the discrete approach used to cast superhero movies, pseudonyms are mostly used, such as Marion Cotillard’s role in “The Dark Knight Rises”. On the contrary, Sony refused to make any comments about this, when asked. The representatives of Marvel and Zendaya did not give an immediate response to The Wrap’s wish to comment.

Let’s shift our focus from the information provided by Marvel and Sony to Zendaya receiving a lot of hate for being the next Mary Jane Watson. The expectation of who MJW should look like must not be there at all because when she was first introduced in 1965 in the comics (#25). Peter Parker himself as well as the readers were kept in the dark of what she looked like as her face was absurdly hidden behind a potted houseplant.

Spidey fans are resenting on the “Dancing With The Stars” dancer because according to them, MJW is known by the color of her skin and her red hair. With the latter not being the problematic element, Zendaya’s skin color seems to be getting a lot of limelight suddenly.

These haters must realize that IT IS NOT THAT BIG OF A DEAL! There is more to our quintessential Mary Jane Watson than her red hair and white skin. Although these are the elements drawn by artist John Romita Sr. and inspired by starlet Ann-Margret. MJW was played by Kirsten Dunst – a natural blonde in a previous Sony abundance. Why can’t people just embrace diversity and appreciate the stand that Zendaya is about to take with respect to this new role?

Lastly, if the inordinate support for the new to-be MJW is a sign of anything then it is a voiced-part of the audience who are all set to throw down for films that portray not the past but the future and that the broad and positive minded casting choices are actually smart business decisions. But is it the right thing to do?

“Spiderman: Homecoming,” produced by Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige is going to come in cinemas on July 7th, 2017.
