Bethesda Surprised That Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus Is Sparking Political Controversies

Wolfenstein 2

The Wolfenstein games have made it known that they’re all about killing nazis and the upcoming Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus has taken it one step further to market that statement! Bethesda has been marketing the game for it’s anti-nazi elements and it has sparked quite a bit of political criticism but the company has replied with a bold statement defending their stance.

“At the time none of us expected that the game would be seen as a comment on current issues, but here we are. Bethesda doesn’t develop games to make specific statements or incite political discussions. We make games that we think are fun, meaningful, and immersive for a mature audience.”

In Wolfenstein’s case, it’s pure coincidence that Nazis are marching in the streets of America this year. And it’s disturbing that the game can be considered a controversial political statement at all.”

Bethesda’s PR Department spoke to Game Industry and this is what Pete Hines, Vice President, had to say about the controversy regarding The New Colossus. He stated that Bethesda makes games irrespective of any political statements that the people think the games are carrying, they make games that are fun to them and their target audience.

The marketing campaign that reignited the controversies was the recent poster for the game that said “Make America Nazi-free again!” which related to the recent Nazi protest that took place in actual America, Bethesda cleared up that the slogan was just to make the game accessible to a wider audience and not fuel anything political.

I don’t get the whole outrage, Wolfenstein has traditionally been a series about the fight against super-powered Nazi’s. The current political environment should not in any way affect a game which is set in a fictional premise.

Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus comes out for the PS4, Xbox One and PC on October 27th, 2017. Be sure to let us know in the comments section below if you’ll be picking it up and stay tuned for more!
