In a financial summary for 2016 , CD Projekt Red reported that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt had stellar sales in Q3 of 2016. The sales of the game and its two expansions Heart Of Stone and Blood and Wine were still going strong.
“Excellent sales of The Witcher 3 plus expansion packs, observed in the third quarter, confirm that despite having been out for a year and a half the game continues to attract new fans – remarks Piotr Nielubowicz, CFO at CD PROJEKT S.A. – I also trust that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Game of the Year Edition, prepared in anticipation of the holiday season, will be the perfect Christmas present for many gamers.”
Furthermore CD Projekt Red reported a total revenue of 584 Million PLN , and a net profit of 251 Million PLN. It also states that since its inception The Witcher franchise has went on to sell over 25 million units worldwide.
The report also talks about seasonal and cyclical activities with CD Projekt Red taking 2 to 4 years to produce a game . The initial development work on a new game begins before they finish development on the previous game in the franchise and are ready to be released.
This is interesting because The Witcher 3 came out in the year 2015. What this means is that the 4 year development cycle will be complete in 2019 . CDPR has already termed Cyberpunk as having more potential than the Witcher 3, and recently if we take into account the fact that the entire Witcher series has had a development cycle of 4 years starting from The Witcher which was first released in 2007 , it looks increasingly likely that Cyberpunk 2077 will be headed our way come 2019.
CD Projekt Red has done a phenomenal job in ensuring The Witcher saga was one of the most memorable RPG series in gaming history , and hopefully Cyberpunk 2077 will continue in the same vein.
