VR made headlines with the release of Oculus Rift and Vive earlier this year, and more recently PlayStation VR last month. While Sony is really pushing this new technology with their PS4, the Xbox One is keeping its distance from VR for now. Xbox’s Phil Spencer made some interesting remarks regarding the state of VR until now.
Spencer spoke with Stevivor on the subject of VR, where he revealed he had quiet a go at it, including owning an Oculus Rift and an HTC Vive, and having used PSVR as well.
When Spencer was asked if Xbox would be looking to bring VR to Xbox One, or more specifically the Scorpio next year, Spencer revealed that they are having a look into the potential of VR with Scorpio, but aren’t certain as to when they’ll actually be comfortable with it. “I think VR will find its spot in gaming; I would make that bet. We designed Scorpio as a VR-capable console. Whether that happens this year, next year or the year after… like I said, I still think the creative community has to get its arms around what are these new tools, and this new feeling — this new immersion.” What experiences do you put in people’s hands to have a long term engagement? Most of these things I’m playing now feel like demos and experiments, which I actually think it’s absolutely the right thing to have happened. That’s not a criticism at all, but should be happening. But I think it will take time.”
Spencer really has a valid point, with several of the launch titles for PSVR providing either really small or limited experiences that are designed to showcase the technology. We hope that the technology is successful and is accepted, and grows to the point where Spencer feels it is right for Xbox One and Scorpio.
