Fans and critics alike have praised the casting , and Sony must be lauded for their efforts to land an A-List actor to play the character of Eddie Brock.
The studio also confirmed that Venom will hit the theatres in October 2018, and shooting will begin this fall. In Marvel Comics Eddie Brock is a photographer and a rival to Peter Parker who merges with the Alien Symbiote and in the process becomes Venom and sets out to destroy Peter Parkers life.
Originally the spin-off was supposed to be a part of the ongoing Spider-Man franchise that starred Andrew Garfield , however those plans were scrapped after another reboot was initiated after just 2 films in the series. The character of venom has also previously appeared in Toby Maguire starrer Spider-Man 3 where the character was played by Topher Grace.
Initial reports suggest that Sony was looking to create a universe like the MCU where the characters and stories where interconnected . With the most recent announcement it now appears increasingly likely that this scenario will indeed pan out.
Sony holds the rights to the Spider-Man movies and Marvel had to strike a deal with them to let Tom Holland’s character be in The Avengers Civil War . Venom’s arrival means that there will be a separate Marvel Universe backed by Sony which will feature significant yet lesser known characters , and this can be seen as a sort of competition for the MCU in the near future.
