“Captain America: Civil War” directors Joe and Anthony Russo recently talked about the identity and role of Steve Rogers aka Captain America in the upcoming movie “Avengers: Infinity War”. At the end of the ‘Civil War’ Steve was seen without his signature uniform and shield while breaking out his fellows from the superheroes prison in the middle of the ocean. This led fans to speculate whether Steve was relinquishing his role as ‘Captain America’, and luckily the Civil War directors recently cleared the air out.
The Russo Brothers who also direct the upcoming Avengers film recently sat down with the Huffington Post, and confirmed the rumor that Steve Rogers won’t be Captain America in the ‘Infinity War’. “I think him dropping that shield is him letting go of that identity. [It’s] him admitting that certainly the identity of Captain America was in conflict with the very personal choice that he was making”, Joe Russo stated.
Fans will be now left wondering over the fate of their beloved character, and what role he’ll be playing if not as the Captain. The character (played by Chris Evans) has been a Marvel fan favorite for quiet along while, so it’s no wonder that fans are concerned about the Captain’s faith and role in the upcoming Marvel Film, Avengers: Infinity War. Even though Rogers will be giving up his identity it’s assumed that he’ll still be an integral part in the upcoming movie. Perhaps we’ll get to see him assume a new identity like when he became the Nomad in the comics after losing faith in the government.
The move could also be temporary since the Captain will definitely fight alongside The Avengers when Thanos arrives. Termed as the ‘big bad purple guy’ Thanos will be wreaking havoc becoming earth’s biggest threat to date yet. To stand any chance, The Avengers will need all the arsenal they have at their disposal including the Captain and his shield. So it’s safe to assume we’ll be seeing Steve Rogers come out of his retirement pretty soon, and lay the fan’s concern to rest.
However, it’ll be quite interesting to see how the Marvel Cinematic Universe involves the character of Steve Rogers in ‘Infinity Wars’ and the upcoming MCU movies. Does he take up the mantle of Captain America again in the future or not? We’ll have to wait and find out. What are your views on the Captain’s retirement?
