The upcoming zombie-survival game, State of Decay 2, will launch with three maps instead of just one. The game’s developer, Undead Labs, confirmed that the game will have 3 maps at launch, each of them ‘roughly the size of the original’.
The maps will be varied and different to each other. The devs explained “You should expect to see slightly different environments, definitely different landmarks and locations, different layouts lending themselves to different strategies, unique home sites, and even different mission types.”
Undead Labs went on to explain why they decided to launch the game with 3 maps instead of one, like in the original State of Decay. Basically, they didn’t want to make missions repetitive and give players a sense of ‘deja-vu’, and this also allows the developers to potentially release more maps in different locales further down the line to allows players to play in diverse locations.
Let’s hear it in the words of Undead Labs: “Why’d we do it that way? Well, primarily because it makes the game more fun. It really feels like you’re moving from one small town to another, and creates a tremendous sense of immersion. And perhaps counter-intuitively, it makes the world feel even bigger.”
“You know how on one map the longer you play, the more you start feeling deja-vu with every mission? That’s less of an issue with separate maps. And see above strategies and missions. Oh, and one more detail – the multiple maps set up makes it easy to expand the world down the line, if you know what I mean”
Well, that’s a cheeky way of saying they’re planning on releasing new maps in the future. Undead also said in the blog post that they wanted to implement a system where players can move survivors and collected items from one area to another. If they move from an area where they had buildings, they’d get some sort of refund instead of moving the building. The game is still in development however, so this system could change before they launch the game.
State of Decay 2 will have a larger game world than it’s predecessor, as promised last year by Undead Labs boss Jeff Strain. State of Decay 2 will launch this year for PC and Xbox One. The games release date will be unvieled at E3.
