PlayerUnknown’s has, in a very short amout of time, made an impact on the gaming world. The game has been extremely succesful, taking the world of PC gaming by storm and competing with juggernauts like CS:GO, DOTA 2 and League of Legends, and recently even managed to surpass CS:GO to become the second most popular game on Steam. The premise of the game is simple: Get dropped into a vast map with 99 other players, and try to survive till the end.
Brendan Greene, popularly known as the titular PlayerUnknown, is the creator of the game. He first made his debut into the battle royale genre with an Arma 2 mod, which later got licensed for H1Z1’s King of the Hill, which ultimately lead to Battlegrounds.
But what is Brendan’s future plan? In a recent interview with Game Informer, Brendan says he has his sights set on the survival game genre. “I’ve wanted to make a survival game. I mean, I love DayZ and I love DayZ standalone, but I have my own idea for a survivial game, and I just want to make a game that I want to play” he said. “It’s why I started with battle royale. I’m hoping my next is a game that other people will want to play as well. You know, because of the success for this one, no pressure for it to be a successor or anything.”
Brendan also said he doesn’t see the game as a one-time release, but as a platform or service, so it’s safe to say developer Bluehole will support the game for many years to come. They’re currently working on two new maps, but they will take several months to release considering the size and complexity of each map. The game is also set to launch on the Xbox One later this year as a timed exclusive.
