ReCore was recently released for the Xbox One and Windows 10. The action-adventure platform video game was developed by Armature Studio and Concept with assistance from Asobo Studio, and published by Microsoft Studios. It’s fair to say the game didn’t quite end up wooing the critics. Nevertheless as a whole it does seem a fairly solid game overall, an opinion Xbox head Phil Spencer seems to share. According to Spencer, ReCore is the sort of game that reminds him of why he fell in love with gaming in the first place.
In a recent interview with AusGamers, Phil Spencer said:
ReCore is one of those games that makes me remember why I fell into gaming in the first place. Joule is a great lead character [and] I think the series doesn’t take itself too seriously, you know, it’s how gaming started, right?
And this is going to seem like the weirdest transition, but it’s similar to how I actually feel about Gears [of War]. With Gears, people can kind of look at it on the outside and think it’s a very serious game, but those of us who’ve played through the game realise that it kind of makes fun of itself at many points, but then you actually get to these really high-tension points in the game where there is real emotion and I think it does a nice job playing off of that, and I think ReCore does the same thing.
ReCore has laid out the blueprint for a franchise which appears to have lots of potential. The game certainly merits a sequel and it is very likely that we may see one in the future.
Let us hope for any sequel the studio would learn from the mistakes of the first game and to ensure a more refined gaming experience.
