Ever since The Last Of US 2 trailer was revealed at PlayStation Experience in December the internet has been abuzz with many different theories. The common denominator in all of those theories was the perceived demise of Joel.
I was fortunate enough to initially spot Strange Rebel Gaming’s Theseus theory which was in my opinion really sound , and introduced the idea that Ellie might be seeking revenge for a lover. However there is another theory which has come up and what excites me is the fact that it actually has its origins in the Bible. So without further ado, lets get to it.
The centerpiece of The Last Of Us 2’s trailer is the song Ellie is heard singing , now it may sound a bit crazy but this might actually serve as an indicator for the games release date , but more on that later .
Lets first focus on the lyrics of the song in the trailer which is “Through The Valley ” by Shawn James
I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
And I’ll fear no evil because I’m blind to it all
And my mind and my gun they comfort me
Because I know I’ll kill my enemies when they come
Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life
And I will dwell on this earth forevermore
Still I walk beside the still waters and they restore my soul
But I can’t walk on the path of the right because I’m wrong
Now although not like for like these lyrics are actually quite similar to some verses found in Psalm 23 King James Version.
First lets focus on the verses in the passage, and you will instantly see the similarities with the song If you start from the 4th verse . What it could be trying to tell is what Joel’s role will be in The Last Of Us 2.It might be referring to the fact that Joel might have been kidnapped, or and this one is probably more likely he does not agree with what Ellie is about to do , and hence in the trailer he asks her “Are you really gonna do this kiddo?”.
Hence maybe Ellie has strayed of the path which Joel actually set for her, and Joel doesn’t agree with the shape of things to come. It’s no secret that the story is going to be about hate , the most plausible explanation for this is the death of a lover which has been well talked about in many different rumors . There is also the chance and this is what I think will happen that Ellie has actually figured out that she was the cure all along and does not agree with Joel’s decision to save her.
There is one other thing that seems to also indicate that Ellie knows she is actually the cure , and that is the tattoo on her arm. The tattoo on her arm is a fern leave which can also be used for medicine, in short it can be used as a “cure”. In some cultures the fern is also associated with health and life , and hence it could be a symbolic gesture towards the fact that Ellie now realizes that she was actually the cure.
Now Bible verses are numbered for ease of reference , so that you can find the verse you are looking for by their respective numbers. The verses that Ellie is saying are actually numbered in a way which can be put on calendar. In this case this is passage 23 from Psalms , and verse 4 . This could mean that the release date could possibly be 4/23/2019. I am going to go with 2019 since Naughty Dog will take its sweet time in giving us a masterpiece.
