Hyper Light Drifter is one of the best games to come out this year. It’s a beautifully crafted 2D ARPG that is a spiritual successor to the Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and is also inspired by Studio Ghibli’s beautiful Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind as well as the vast library of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in general. The game’s narrative is told only through its stellar visuals and breathtaking soundtrack, composed by Disasterpeace.
The game was released on all major platforms, PS4, Xbox One, PC and even Mac. It was received as a masterpiece by critics and players alike, the only complaints were the 30fps lock and the extreme difficulty of the game, the latter of which was changed to make the game a bit easier in a post-release patch. As of 27th September, 2016, a patch that’s still in beta was released that adds a 60fps toggle to the game as well as two new modes.
The first of which is a Boss Rush mode, featuring all new achievements for players to unlock. This mode is playable once players beat the game. The second is a ‘’Newcomer’’ Mode, featuring less achievements but making the game significantly easier for players who are interested mainly in the game’s visuals and narrative, making the gameplay much easier. This long awaited patch has already brought players who were previously hesitant to buy the game because of the 30fps lock to the decision that this game is a must-buy. Out of all the annual AAA releases that we see from Assassin’s Creed, Call of Duty and other franchises of the sort, there are games like Hyper Light Drifter which although, are beloved by all who have played them, do not receive the attention that they deserve. This patch has made the game’s popularity skyrocket even more as the new patch accompanied by a reduction on the game’s price tag has resulted in Hyper Light Drifter being among the Top Sellers on Steam right now. If you haven’t played this game, you are missing out on one of the best games to come out in a very long time.
Hyper Light Drifter is available on PS4, Xbox One and PC but the Wii U and PS Vita versions have unfortunately been cancelled.
