EA Sports has made a class gesture by giving all FIFA 17 Ultimate Team players the kit and badge of Chapecoense, to pay tribute to the Brazilian side following the tragic plane crash on its way to the biggest match in the clubs history.
FIFA 17 is encouraging players to wear the Chapecoense kit and crest in-game to show solidarity with the victims of the incident which claimed Seventy-one lives. The crash occurred when Chapecoense was flying to Medellin, Colombia to play in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana Finals, the second-most prestigious club competition in South American football.
Only three players managed to survive including goalkeeper Jakson Follmann who had a leg amputated.
Chapecoense (formally called Associação Chapecoense de Futebol) were considered minnows in Brazillian football who had only returned the top flight in 2014, for the first time since 1979. Their meteoric rise from Brazil’s third division to the finals of the Copa Sudamericana was hailed as a fairytale which unfortunately made a tragic end. The country declared three days of mourning for its fallen heroes.
Once again we saw a show of solidarity and compassion from around the footballing world as Chapecoense’s opponents, Atlético Nacional of Colombia, offered to concede a draw to allow Chapecoense to be awarded the Copa Sudamericana championship. Clubs form the Brazilian Serie A have also offered to loan players for free to Chapecoense in order to help them rebuild their playing squad. The clubs have also requested Brazil’s Football Association to exempt Chapecoense from relegation for the next three years.
Below you can see FIFA 17‘s message as follows:
In support of Chapecoense
