Gaming Bolt recently sat down and had an interview with Battle Chasers Director and Vigil games Co-Founder Ryan Stefanelli. During the interview the conversation turned towards PS4 Pro’s checkerboard 4K rendering.
Sony’s PS4 Pro implements the checkerboard rendering technique whilst Microsoft remains adamant in their claims that the games on Xbox One Scorpio will run in native 4K. According to Stefanelli the difference between checkerboard and native 4K will not be significant. here is what he had to say about the matter.
“The difference is that the 4K rendered output will look very crisp and smooth while the checkerboard technique will not look as sharp when directly compared but this depends also on the quality and size of the screen/TV. From a development perspective the checkerboard technique is a bit harder to implement as it is a custom implementation while a native 4k resolution is just a higher frame output resolution. In our situation Unity takes care about it anyways.”
When asked about the limitations the console has with regards to game development . This is what he had to say.
“It’s still both the CPU and the GPU. With the PS4 Pro’s GPU we can’t offer native 4K rendering which is easy to achieve on good desktop GPUs nowadays.”
So what do you make of Stefanelli’s comments. Do you think there is a huge difference when it comes to 4K gaming , regardless if its checkerboard or native 4K? Let us know by commenting in the comments section below.
