Destiny Devs Had No Clue What The Darkness Was Supposed To Be

The original Destiny was a good game, but it had its flaws. The problems with the game lore, specifically that a large part of it was in Grimoires. Thankfully, unlike the first game, Bungie has confirmed that Destiny 2 lore won’t be a part of Grimoires. Another problem with the original games lore was that the games main antagonist, The Darkness, was very undefined and vague.

But as it turns out, there’s a reason The Darkness was so vague and undefined. According to the game’s developer Bungie, they themselves had no clue what The Darkness actually was. Luke Smith, the director of The Taken King and the upcoming Destiny 2, confirmed this while speaking to Kotaku;

“So, I think that at a point, just totally candid? We had no idea what it was. Straight up. We had no clue. We didn’t know what it was, and we, for a period, we chose we’re going to lump all the races, and you see this in the tooltips in the game. ‘Minions of the Darkness”. And we had taken all the races and said ”Ah, they’ll just be the Darkness”. But that’s what the IP deserves.”

Well seems to make sense as the original Destiny was criticized by many within the gaming community for having a lackluster story , and now we have an idea why. Though it will be interesting to see if the sequel does incorporate a better storytelling experience.

Bungie now says they’re not giving up on the idea of the Darkness, but are making it take a backseat while they figure out how to deal with it and incorporate it as a comprehensible foe;

“When we’re going to talk about Darkness next, we need to know what it is and have a plan for it. And we do”.
