The last decade has arguably been the one where superhero movies have done a lot of business. While super hero comic books are much older, to conceptualize them into movies has recently gained pace. But do these movies have a sustainable future?
Normally, all of these super hero movies have generic and predictable story lines. Although these movies rose to fame quite swiftly, they may fall faster unless directors and producers come with something different. So, what can be done?
One way to extend the product lines of these films are to come up with more crossovers among different super hero universes and give the fans unexpected. Ryan Reynolds, when asked about the possibility of a Deadpool- Avengers crossover seemed really excited. As reported by Total Film, here’s what he had to say “That sounds like a great idea, but a very expensive idea. Can you imagine the shit-talking contest with Iron Man? Oh, that would be great. But it would have to be rated R to completely unharness everybody. Unbridle the merriment and watch them go…”
One major problem that may impede the crossover is ownership of franchises. Deadpool is owned by Fox while Avengers is owned by Disney. The idea of a cross over would lead to immense complexities and may be extremely expensive. Recently a deal between Sony and Disney related to bringing “Your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man” to Marvel’s cinematic universe did take place, same is the case with Hulk, as its movie rights are owned by Universal. But the question is can such deals be repeated?
We believe that soon superhero films might lose their charm and something would need to be done to extend their product lines. While currently crossovers may seem a little far-fetched in the long-run they might become a reality.
