Games Stop Earnings Call: Major October Releases Underperform

The videogame retailer Gamestop today reported its earnings for the quarter ending October 29, and the results were not quite what they expected. The store reported global sales of $1.96 billion, which is a decrease of 2.8% year over year.

“Last few weeks of October” underperformed, with new software sales dropping by 8.6 percent.

No specific titles were mentioned although Gears of War 4, Battlefield 1, Civilization VI, Skyrim Special Edition, and Titanfall 2 were amongst the big name titles released for the month of October. Titanfall 2’s sales were particularly disappointing and well documented because despite critical acclaim the game suffered from poor sales due to EA sandwiching it between Battlefield 1 and Call Of Duty Infinite Warfare.

Perhaps unsurprisingly the game which performed best was Pokemon Sun And Moon. Preorders for the game were higher than anything witnessed by GameStop in over 5 years.

Although there were no specifics mentioned Call of Duty Infinite Warfare underperformed despite boasting a stellar star cast, and improved gameplay.

PS4 Pro has had a strong start and is expected to continue its increase in sales in the coming months as well, while the PSVR is also selling really well and has an estimated shelf life of ten days.

Perhaps the most disappointing aspect of the earnings call is something which every gamer feels and yet EA disagree upon. That is the fact that Titanfall 2 has literally been fed to the dogs by being put between two similar FPS who have a reputation of being amongst the very best franchises. However kudos to Pokemon Sun and Moon as it appears that the long standing franchise is indeed headed towards a renaissance.
