At E3 2017, in an interview with GamesBeat, the CEO Fred Chesnais said that Atari is currently in the works for a gaming console.
He did not say a lot about the device to GamesBeat but only mentioned that Atari is ‘back in the hardware business’. The previous gaming console was launched by Atari on 1993 and it was discontinued 3 years after; it was named Jaguar.
A brief video was posted on the 8th of June by Atari that teased a device named the Ataribox. The video was posted on YouTube and the title of the video was ‘a brand new Atari product’ which is ‘years in the making’. All those who are interested in the console can sign up on the website of Atari for more information.
Out of all the details that Chesnais gave to Gamesbeat, the only one for Ataribox was that it is to be based on PC technology. The video shows a unit to have a wood veneer similar to that famed Atari 2600, the first console of Atari and then a white logo of Atari shows up. It is rather difficult to think that Atari making a device competing with PlayStations and Xboxes but it isn’t unreasonable to predict an NES Classical flashback.
Details remain scarce regarding the console’s specifications and it will be interesting to see whether Atari launches a traditional console or a classic one like the NES that was released a few months back. Let us know your opinions by commenting in the comments section below.
