In a recent interview Ashraf Ismail, the Lead Director of Assassin’s Creed Origins, revealed some details about the main protagonist of the upcoming entry in the franchise and what leads him to fight for his cause.
Bayek, the protagonist, comes from a descent of warriors that were sworn to protect the land of Egypt and is thus connected to his homeland deeply. Bayek is a Magi, and so were his ancestors that were warriors sworn to defend Egypt. These fighters are trained in numerous ways of combat and all of them are available to the players to make use of.
“Bayek himself feels sympathy and compassion for the Egyptians, but he is sorry for outsiders. He believes in the rituals and the police structures of ancient Egypt. But he keeps to the spirit of the past. … If he represents ancient Egypt, what does he have to do or do if his world dies out when the new world comes and if he wants to survive in this new world – what does it have to become?”
Bayek is wholly represented as his homeland: violent and known to be moody. It was important to portray him with those qualities to accurately display Egypt’s conditions at the time. He can be calm at times while completely violent and irrational at moments.
This seems like a fresh new approach to the series, knowing that the likes of Ezio Auditore and Edward Kenway have set unrealistically high standards for interesting protagonists. Ubisoft seems to be on the right track with Assassin’s Creed Origins as they took a break with the series for a year.
Ashraf Ismail put emphasis on the fact that they his team were working hard to actually put quality in the game rather than filling up the world with mindless and uninteresting side quests.
Assassin’s Creed Origins is set to release on 27th October for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC so be sure to stay tuned for more updates!
