The 2024 Olympics are scheduled to be held in Paris France, and may feature E-Sports as well . The news comes via the Co-President of the Olympics Committee Tony Estanguet who recently told the Associated Press that discussions were being held with various E-Sports representative to ensure that gaming becomes a part of the 2024 Olympics.
Here’s what Tony Estanguet had to say about the subject
“We have to look at it because we can’t say, ‘It’s not us. It’s not about Olympics,'” Estanguet said. “The youth, yes they are interested in eSport and this kind of thing. Let’s look at it. Let’s meet them. Let’s try if we can find some bridges.
“I don’t want to say ‘no’ from the beginning,” he added. “I think it’s interesting to interact with the IOC, with them, the eSports family, to better understand what the process is and why it is such a success.”
Estanguet believes that if the Olympics is to maintain its relevance amongst a new generation of fans it must seriously consider E-Sports as a legitimate sports in order to attract new fans to the mega event and to maintain its relevance for generations and generations to come.
Paris has not yet officially been announced as the host of the 2024 Olympics however it is widely expected that this is a mere formality and that it will be announced in September of this year. Los Angeles was also in the running to host the Olympics in 2024 , however they decided to instead host the event in 2028.
While the idea of E-Sports in the Olympics does sound interesting and will attract a slew of the younger generation, it still remains to be seen how the general public reacts to such a proposition. As it stands Olympics is generally seen as a athletes sports , and while E- Sports does require strategy and wits it’s not exactly renowned for its athleticism.
